Living Wage Week Oct. 31st - Nov. 6th

Living Wage Week is an annual nationwide event to increase awareness and dialogue about the need for wages that can help lift people out of poverty and improve their quality of life.

Living Wage is the basic hourly wage required for a family of four with both parents working full-time year-round to meet basic needs and maintain a decent standard of living. Based on the actual costs of living in a given community, Living Wage provides a basic level of economic security, but still represents a conservative, bare bones budget. Therefore, a Living Wage doesn't include building a savings, paying off debt, holidays, care for elder, sick, or disabled family members, or anything else beyond cost of living expenses.  Fraser Valley’s Living Wage for 2016 was calculated at $16.28 per hour.  

The difference between a Minimum Wage and Living Wage is that the former is a legislated minimum set by the provincial government; the latter is an employer taking the initiative to pay wages that reflect the true costs of living in a community.  

More than 50 Living Wage Employers across BC agree and have certified with the Living Wage for Families Campaign.  Certified Living Wage Employers in the Fraser Valley include Vancity, Mission Community Skills Centre Society, Pacific Community Resources Society, Mount Lehman Credit Union, and United Way of the Fraser Valley.
