Vancity was recognized today as Fraser Valley's first Living Wage employer at a ceremony held at Vancity's Chilliwack branch. The event coincided with Vancity's recertification in Greater Vancouver and recent certification in Greater Victoria.
Vancity, has put tremendous effort into fulfilling their commitments as Canada's largest Living Wage employer. They are implementing equal effort in the Fraser Valley, committing to pay the Metro Vancouver Living Wage (almost $3/hr higher than the Fraser Valley Living Wage) to all their direct staff and locally based contracted employees.
The credit union called on other key B.C. employers to join the campaign, stating that “If both parents in a family are working full-time, their children should not be living in poverty. Just as we consider our environmental footprint, it’s our hope that more B.C. employers will consider their social and economic impact and pay their employees a living wage.”
Vancity supports the Living Wage campaign on numerous levels, for example by sharing with other businesses the challenges and solutions they've encountered along the way. They are also partnered Living Wage for Families, the Community Social Planning Council of Greater Victoria and Living Wage Fraser Valley to increase the number of certified living wage employers in B.C.
